I don't think I've ever seen a diff with miles on it that didn't have some signs of minor fluid leakage. They usually always have oil residue on the cases. Also, most rear diffs don't allow you to check the fluid. They simply have a fill plug and a drain plug. I would consider any oil straight up leaking out of the engine as excessive. Not that it's urgent or even necessary to fix, but it's still excessive, as engines aren't supposed to be dropping any oil. It's a good indication that a seal is failing or has failed. An engine losing all its oil would be a catastrophic oil leak. Changing the front diff oil every 3k is just stupid.

He has a 4.0L like me, 4.0s are known to have rear man seal issues. Mine was done by the PO in 2012, but most owners just deal with it and keep a quart of oil in the back.
